Slocum et moi

After the Second World War, eleven-year-old François leads a sheltered life with his parents in a Parisian suburb. While he is very close to his mother, his taciturn and distant father remains a great mystery to him. One day, his parents start building a wooden sailing boat in the garden.

François soon realises that his father is inspired by the daring adventures of Joshua Slocum – the first man to sail around the world alone. Despite his initial scepticism, François also becomes increasingly fascinated by the project. Intrigued, he helps his father with the construction and gradually grows closer to him.

Now at the age of 84, Jean-François Laguionie ranks as one of the great legends of animation filmmaking in France. He has received international awards at numerous festivals for works such as “Gwen, le livre de sable”, “Louise en hiver” and “Le voyage du prince” and has also been a regular guest at Fantoche. In his latest film, he devotes himself to an unconventional father-son story. Gently and without melodramatic pretence, he paints a tender portrait of two people who love each other but find it difficult to connect. In addition to its multi-layered narrative, “Slocum et moi” also captivates with its beautiful drawings that are stylistically reminiscent of children’s books. Nominated for Best Feature Film at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival. (Mischa Haberthür)
