Ernest & Célestine – Le voyage en Charabie
After their first Oscar-nominated adventure, Ernest the bear and Célestine the mouse are back! When Ernest’s violin is accidentally broken, only the violin maker in Gibberitia can repair it. But Gibberitia has changed a lot: all musical notes have been banned, apart from the note of C.
After a long hibernation, all Ernest the bear really wants to do is make music with his violin and earn some money to fill his tummy. Much to his demise, however, his violin is broken and there is only one place where it can be repaired – in Ernest’s hometown of Gibberitia. But Ernest is not very keen on going there. But his crafty friend Célestine the mouse perseveres and the two set off for the erstwhile land of music. Sadly, Gibberitia no longer boasts that title, as music is now banned throughout the country. Together with their accomplices, including a mysterious masked rebel, Ernest and Célestine attempt to remedy this injustice and bring back joy to the land of bears.
In stunning watercolour-like drawings, the film tells how important it is to fight for what you love. A film for everyone aged six and over that emphasises the vital importance of music, while proving that with solidarity and determination, even the greatest obstacles can be overcome.
In 2020, Fantoche screened “Ernest & Célestine” in the “After Lockdown Pleasures” series and is now presenting another adventure of the unlikely couple, which was nominated for both an Annie Award and a César. (Corinna Haag)
