The Colors Within
Shy Totsuko sees the aura of others as colours. But she cannot see her own colour. On the surface, Totsuko’s story is about the founding of a band. But in this “slice-of-life” anime, director Naoko Yamada closely examines the emotional worlds of her characters.
Totsuko is a shy high-school student who sees the world a bit differently, for she can perceive feelings, moods, people and their personalities as individual colours. To avoid attracting attention, Totsuko keeps her unique trait to herself. Fascinated by the colour of her former classmate Kimi, however, she timidly seeks her out and meets Rui, who is just as shy. The trio promptly form a band and use a remote, abandoned church for their jam sessions – and as an escape from their everyday lives. Together, they not only discover newfound creativity, but also the courage to face their problems.
Director Naoko Yamada gained international recognition with “A Silent Voice” (2016), but had already worked successfully in the industry before that. Takashi Kojima, who worked with Yamada on the acclaimed anime series “Heike Monogatari” (2021), was also chief animator for “The Colors Within”. Kensuke Ushio (“Chainsaw Man”), a fixture of the animation studio Science SARU, contributed his jazzy score. Together, they have transformed the screenplay by Reiko Yoshida (“Lu Over the Wall”) with a great deal of warmth, laced with expressive colours and loads of music. (Dorian Duric)
