Four Souls of Coyote
Young Native Americans confront the crew of an oil pipeline project about to be built on their ancestral land. A tribal elder recalls the ancient tale of their Creation myth and imparts the timeless message that humanity’s challenges have an impact on everyone.
Áron Gauder’s latest work is an epic adventure story that addresses current issues such as global warming and the destruction of the environment told from the perspective of an indigenous Creation story. In this Creation myth, life on earth begins with two characters: the Creator and the Coyote. The Creator shapes the material world out of a handful of mud. Although he strives for beauty and harmony, he has a weakness: he cannot control his anger and so, without meaning to, he also creates Coyote, the troublemaker. Coyote is the ultimate trickster, the master of mischief-making. He originates in the Creator’s dream. Driven by his desires, he begins to create life himself. As a result, conflict with the Creator is inevitable.
“Four Souls of Coyote” was honoured with the Jury Award at the renowned Annecy International Animation Film Festival this year. The adventure, filled with animals, magic, hunger, greed, and the sacred circle of all creations, gives us hope that it is not too late to correct our course. The film underscores the increasingly urgent need to live respectfully and in harmony with nature before the damage becomes irreversible. (Xenia Nguyen)
