Swiss Competition
This year’s entries in the Swiss Competition are extremely varied, being both thought-provoking and poignant, and at times shocking. From over 70 films submitted, 17 works were selected for screening in the two competition programmes.
A delusional diva (“Diva Sicanella”) clashes with grazing cows (“About a Cow”), and ducks are not to be trusted anyway (“Canard”). Ink and watercolour are used as weapons to portray a childhood marked by violence (“La Perra”).
With new films by well-known names such as Lotti Bauer (“FINAL WHISTLE”) and Samuel Patthey (“Voiceless”), the entire cinema will be buzzing. While Jadwiga Kowalska’s award-winning work (“The Car That Came Back From the Sea”) takes us on an extraordinary road trip through the past to the Polish Baltic Sea, Bianca Caderas and Kerstin Zemp (“Matta and Matto”) depict dystopian visions as well as desires.
Graduation films by students deal with such topics as gender identity using stop-motion (“Dragfox”) or the complex relationship between humans and water by means of charcoal techniques (“We the Water”).
Coincidentally, two of the films have the same title: “Long Distance”. Whether they have something in common and if so, what exactly, is best left for the audience to judge for themselves.
