Tony, Shelly and the Magic Light

Eleven-year-old Tony was born with an unusual feature: he glows. He spends his days at home in his blanket fort and dreams of no longer being alone. His world is soon turned upside down though when a peculiar girl named Shelly moves in.

Tony is 11 years old and is wasting away at home. There is something very unique about him – as soon as he takes off his mask and gloves, he glows. His parents want to protect him, so they isolate him from the outside world. For Tony, this means he spends his days at home alone in his blanket bunker and dreams of having friends. Just before Christmas, a peculiar girl named Shelly moves into his building and turns Tony’s world upside down. Together, they embark on an adventurous quest to find the source of the mysterious, monster-like tufts of darkness that suck the sunshine out of their building. A film about being different, about friendship and fantasy, about light and darkness.

“Tony, Shelly and the Magic Light” is a stop-motion puppet animation made with great attention to detail. The Czech-Slovak-Hungarian co-production is the feature-film debut of director Filip Pošivač, who is also a children’s book illustrator. The film was honoured with the Contrechamp Jury Award at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival. (Dasha Byrne)
