The Inventor

Eccentric inventor Leonardo Da Vinci teams up with the Princess Marguerite to unravel the mysteries of the universe. An ode to human creativity with a captivating blend of stop motion and hand-drawn animation.

Driven by a thirst for knowledge, Leonardo da Vinci spends his days in Rome studying the universe. Because his experiments increasingly displease the Pope, he accepts an invitation to the French court, but the king shows little enthusiasm for Leonardo’s scientific ideals. In fact, he simply wants to use the works of the brilliant inventor to fortify his personal power. Leonardo finds his only ally in Princess Marguerite, the king’s rebellious sister. Against all odds, the two search together for answers to the unsolved riddles of humankind.

Loosely based on the last years of Leonardo da Vinci’s life, “The Inventor” tells of the tender friendship between two outsiders and celebrates human curiosity and creativity. With an opulent mix of stop motion puppet animation and hand drawings, the film brings the ground-breaking teachings of the genius da Vinci to life. To achieve this, the production gathered some of the greatest talents in the animation film scene, with script and direction by Jim Capobianco (“Ratatouille”), and animation by Kim Keukeleire (“Isle of Dogs”, “Ma vie de Courgette”) and Tom Moore (“Wolfwalkers”). (Mischa Haberthür)
