KNIT’S ISLAND

What is real and what is fiction? Where do we draw the line when immersing ourselves in the multiverses we encounter in video games? In the anidoc “Knit’s Island”, a film crew under the guise of avatars meets players and explores their motivations.

The virtual reality world in which the online game “DayZ” is set amounts to 250 square kilometres. The setting: a post-Soviet country which has been hit by an unknown virus that has killed numerous people. For those remaining, the fight for survival and the scarce resources ensues.

The players are on their own and have only one goal: to stay alive as long as possible. What drives them? What motivates their actions? What are their fantasies and stories – or fears? The French directors Ekiem Barbier, Guilhem Causse and Quentin L’helgoualc’h took up the challenge and filmed their documentary entirely within the game. They spent 963 hours in the virtual world of “DayZ” and accompanied the players in this unconventional setting.

“Knit’s Island” was awarded the jury prize of the Burning Lights competition at the Visions du Réel. A documentary that obscures the boundaries between virtual and real worlds, creating an extraordinary experience that makes you think about the interwoven nature of these two realms. (Corinna Haag)
