JOHNNY & ME – EINE ZEITREISE MIT JOHN HEARTFIELD
The graphic artist John Heartfield became world famous in the 1930s for his political satire, and is considered the father of photomontage. This film by Katrin Rothe interweaves documentary and fictional elements, and describes how John Heartfield became an enemy of the Nazi state.
Stephanie discovers John Heartfield’s work at an exhibition. His scathing photomontages about the Nazi state of the 1930s awaken the creative spirit of the graphic artist, who is in a creative crisis. A time tunnel transports her to his studio, where she immediately grabs scissors and paper. The first thing she does is create a paper figure in the shape of Heartfield. Brought back to life, he now tells her his eventful life story.
Born in Berlin in 1891, the German painter, graphic artist, photomontage artist and stage designer was, in Bertolt Brecht’s opinion, one of the most important artists in Europe. For the Nazis, however, he was an enemy of the state, which is why he spent years living as a fugitive in Europe. “Johnny & Me – A Journey Through Time with Heartfield” combines documentary and fictional elements by means of cut-out animation and live action. This reflects not only director Katrin Rothe’s typical style, but also Heartfield’s work.
The film celebrated its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where it was screened in the Contrechamp Competition for Feature Films. Katrin Rothe may already be familiar to Fantoche audiences: her film “1917 – Der wahre Oktober” was screened in 2017, and this year she is returning with her latest work. (Sophie Stirnemann)
