DEEP SEA

Shenxiu falls overboard on a cruise ship and lands in a colourful underwater world. Accompanied by an extravagant restaurant owner, she goes in search of her mother and encounters numerous peculiar characters along the way. A breath-taking colour spectacle that also delves deep into the emotional world.

Shenxiu has been profoundly sad ever since her mother left the family. During a cruise with her father, his new wife and their baby, she is caught by a wave and swept overboard. She finds herself at the bottom of the sea, where she encounters colourful sea creatures, including a hairy, many-eyed creature and the restaurant-owner Nanhe. Together they try to find Shenxiu’s mother, save Nanhe’s restaurant and escape a mysterious and formidable phantom.

In “Shen Hai”, writer and director Xiaopeng Tian combines light-hearted watercolour paintings and 3D animation to create captivating images. The colourful design contrasts with complex themes of loss, sacrifice, hope and grief. “Shen Hai” was screened at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and was nominated for the Crystal Bear for Best Film (awarded by the Children’s and Youth Jury) at the Berlinale. It is Tian’s second feature film after the animated film “Monkey King: Hero is Back” (2015). “Shen Hai” will be screened in 3D at Fantoche. (Sophie Stirnemann)
