CHICKEN FOR LINDA!

Paulette and her daughter Linda are at loggerheads. But behind their broken relationship lies profound pain: the sudden death of Linda’s father seven years ago has left a huge gap in their lives.

A minor misunderstanding opens up old wounds again: Paulette has unfairly punished her daughter. To make amends, she promises to cook Linda’s favourite dish: chicken with peppers. The endeavour proves complicated, however, because all the shops are closed at the moment due to a general strike. Using a series of tricks, Paulette and Linda manage to get hold of a live chicken, but their stunt does not go unnoticed, and their exploits begin to involve more and more people, from policemen and Linda’s friends to a truck driver.

The French-Italian coproduction is a veritable feast of colours and techniques, with rotoscopes alternating with simple figures outlined with clean lines and block colours. By mixing different styles and techniques, the directing duo Chiara Malta and Sébastien Laudenbach evoke a vitality and anarchy typical of the world of children. “We wanted to create something that was hilarious yet poignant. The two elements were never at odds with each other because we made the film for children by imagining ourselves in their shoes and adopting their language,” says co-director Chiara Malta.

“Chicken for Linda” celebrated its premiere at this year’s Cannes Festival in the ACID programme and was honoured with the Cristal for a Feature Film as well as the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. (Martina Monzeglio)
